Healthcare Business Books Cleanup What the label decides

The panel on the bottle is how you know a product left the clinic. The visit does not borrow that panel.

Show the label

A panel is a product, a visit is not

Over the counter items for people often carry an FDA Drug Facts panel. A dietary product often carries a Supplement Facts panel, or it says dietary supplement on the label. Those words are a federal labeling fact. They tell the person entering the books that something tangible moved. They do not tell you the sales-tax answer. That answer belongs to the state where the clinic sits, and it changes.

A visit has no panel. It is time with a clinician. Putting the visit on the product line, because the bottle and the visit were paid together, makes the shelf look like the practice. Putting the bottle on the visit line, because it feels like part of care, makes the product disappear. Either mistake survives all the way to the return if nobody splits the afternoon.

Wound dressings are goods too, even when nobody thinks of them as a retail moment. A supplement with the right panel is a good. A bottle that has no panel, and is not a dressing, does not get to hide inside an exempt neighbor just because they sat on the same shelf. The point of sale has to keep them apart, and the books have to repeat that split.

Bodywork and typing are their own charges

A separate hour of bodywork is not the visit that happened in the exam room, and it is not a bottle. Enter it as its own charge. The state where the clinic sits decides how that hour is taxed. We do not print one state's list of taxable services, because a clinic reader in another state would be misled by it. The useful habit is the same everywhere. Different work, different line.

Paying someone to type a dictated note is paying a person for that work. That pay sits apart from the visit and apart from any product. The information return follows how that person was paid. If the person is on the clinic's payroll, the payroll company reports the wages. If the person is paid as a nonemployee, the note on which form is the one to read, including the threshold that applies to the year of the payment.

What we will not invent

We will not tell you a bottle is exempt because a neighboring clinic treats it that way. We will not tell you a visit is taxable because a retail shop down the road charges tax on a similar bottle. The two questions are different, and only the state where you sit answers them. What we will do is refuse to close a month in which the shelf and the visit are still one number.

If you have two bottles and only one of them has a panel, bring both labels, or a photo of both labels. The photo is enough to say which line each bottle belongs on. It is not enough to state a tax percent, and we will not add one.
